A friend posed an interesting question to me recently: how do you shop online?
I was surprised because I have been an avid online shopper for years and don’t hesitate to buy everything from cookware to designer jackets (I first discovered Mackage online) and even new snacks (mmm Sriracha Popcorn– I seriously have a subscribe and save subscription for this!) after discovering and purchasing them online.
But of course even I had to take that initial leap buying something after trusting only in the little image I saw of it on my computer.
Here are a few tips I still continue to follow to shop effectively online:
1. Know all the costs
The price you see next to that cute little dress may not be the final cost. Additional costs are based on the seller and your shipping location. What is the cost for shipping? Is internet sales tax charged in your state or country? Are you based in another country and have to pay import taxes or duties? If you are buying from an auction, does the auction house charge a fee (these are usually about 20% and based on final bid price)? If you are buying from a personal seller, is there a service or handling fee?
These Prada fairy tale shoes were the result of a long eBay search – the size and stellar condition made these shoes worth the wait (I waited more than one year!)
2. Does it measure up?
Know your measurements. Will that new jacket fit around your shoulders? Will the side table be a sufficient height to coordinate with your sofa? Whether you are buying a piece of clothing, furniture, or appliance, ensure that it will fit on you or in your home. Appliances and electronics should also be checked to ensure that they will work in your country (plug adapters are easy to buy, but make sure that the voltage is compatible or you will end up needing a converter). Note that some items do not have a warranty outside the country of purchase. E.g. I bought my DSLR in Hong Kong, but the warranty was only valid in Hong Kong. Luckily the camera has been great over the years!
3. Details & Reviews
Read those online descriptions thoroughly. If you are buying a piece of clothing, read through the material and measurements (if stated). While I love the look of DVF’s signature silk jersey material, I know that I can’t wear it in certain cuts. I don’t NEED a dress if I HAVE TO wear Spanx in order to look good in the dress. I love Shopbop and Net-a-Porter because they list measurements of the item as well as the measurements of the model. I’m not exactly a model, but I know if the model is wearing a small, I’m not getting an Extra Small! Online comments and reviews are also a great source for understanding fit and quality for the item. Similarly, I love product pictures that show the product in movement (for an article of clothing) or a piece of decor set in a model room (to understand how it could coordinate with other home decor).
This Two’s Company Golden Bamboo folding tray table is perfect for our home – it is chic, discreet, and folds up easily! My husband likes using one tray for remote controls and drink glasses while I use the other one for coffee table books.
4. T&Cs – what are the store’s policies?
Does anyone remember when Gap/Banana Republic had NO time limits on returns? Ahhh, those were the days and the policy applied to online purchases too! Nordstrom is the only store I know that has a similarly generous policy (which is why I have beautiful, unworn Dior pumps sitting in NY waiting to be returned in December!) Review the store’s return and exchange policy so you can understand the return, exchange, and price adjustment policies.
Note also that a conversation with a customer service representative can go a long way. I shop online all year round, but am only back in NY a few time a year. So sometimes, I receive items that simply do not work or are unfortunately damaged, but realize it too late. I have had understanding representatives from Fab and Target that have been able to place an extension on my return (by placing a note in my account) or send me a replacement item. It never hurts to ask!
I bought this final sale from a seller on Purse Blog. The condition was good and it came with the Hermès box as well.
5. Save it
My first rule of online shopping: check to see if there is a discount before checking out. Does a coupon, referral credit, shipping discount, or cash back site exist for this website? I try to find out discount details at sites like Retailmenot and then determine which cash back site will pay me the highest rebate for the website (stores may be listed on multiple cash back sites, but the amount you are returned will vary).
Here is the list of cash back sites in my order of preference (actually sometimes Mr. Rebates edges out Ebates in terms of cash back amount, but Ebates has really quick payments and a greater number of stores):
What other tips do you follow to shop online?

Such good tips! I seem to have hit or miss luck with online shopping unless I’ve already tried it on 3D in person. It’s a bit like gambling so that can be fun (and/or disappointing) lol. Love those tray tables you got. I’m tempted to get one but then again, I need to stick to my “cohesive” design look these days!

Hello dear!
I’m a serial online shopper, and my latest upgrade was subscribing to Ebates as you suggested. Now I’ll subscribe to the other two links. Next step: learning how to use these amazing tools! Thank you and have a great weekend!

Fantastic tips, lovely:) And so in time with the Holidays being just around the corner. xoxo
I think the only tip i have for online shopping is make sure you get free shipping and free returns. I end up returning 90% of stuff I buy online… I’ve actually asked myself on numerous occasions why I keep shopping online when I know it’s most likely going back. But as B&M stores carry less stock and I just NEED to see that pair of shoes in person, well I get trapped in that cycle. I hate the idea of throwing away money shipping things I don’t end up keeping, so that is all I really care about when shopping online!
No final sales – ever!
Super tips doll, I do love shopping online…no lines or pushy shoppers, haha x
