“Embrace what makes you unique, even if it makes others uncomfortable.”
― Janelle Monáe
I wouldn’t say anything about my style is especially quirky or too odd. I started thinking about unique styles when I saw this editorial of Janelle Monáe in Allure July 2018. My husband, who is a bigger music fan than me, introduced me to her music years ago. She never conformed to any specific music nor style. Janelle Monáe wasn’t just a nonconformist or rebel though. She truly seemed to embrace different musical genres to make her own sounds with pop, jazz and hip hop influences. But she also highlighted issues such as marginalized groups, such as African American women. As a result, she wasn’t necessarily mainstream because her songs weren’t bubbly, catchy perfect songs of summer. But they were and continue to be fun, funny, and at times thought-provoking. Similarly, her sense of style has encompassed a wide variety of different styles from androgynous to romantic couture.
While I don’t have access to Janelle Monáe’s awesome closet, I’d definitely want to borrow a few pieces. I’m more of a classic dresser with a nod towards the feminine with a touch of flair. Sometimes I’m considered overdressed, but I don’t care. It’s comfortable for me and makes me feel great. Her style and actions remind me that it’s always important to remain true to yourself. So with that, can I please get that awesome oversized polka dot dress please?

She is, isn’t she?! She’s also a spokesperson for maybelline we’re not the only ones that noticed her beauty.
I’ve always liked Janelle. I wish she hadn’t cut her hair, but I guess she was ready for a change. This editorial of her is quite lovely.
I’m such a fan of Janelle Monae! I just love how she has never been afraid to be herself or do her own thing. She is also proof that you don’t have to parade around in skimpy clothing with your bits hanging out to succeed in music and hollywood.
I’m loving that polka dot dress too! 🙂 I’m not a very adventurous dresses, I try have a little fun with colour sometimes, but this post and editorial is a good reminder that there is so much in fashion we can have fun with! 🙂
Hope you are having a lovely week! It’s a very chilly, wintery week here!
