Why I’ll always have Vintage Seating in my Home

September 4, 2018

I have a thing for chairs (and sometimes sofas as well).  Last year, I bought two sets of vintage chairs because I loved them both so much.  Unfortunately, our 6 seater dining table couldn’t handle 9 chairs so I had to resell a set (I’ll miss you Eastern European cafe chairs!) Well that and my husband thought it was ridiculous that we had these vintage chairs in every room.  But I still continue to look for interesting seating options. Chairs or sofas can really set the mood of a room. So I’m not apologizing for my fondness for chairs and here are a few reasons why I’ll always have vintage seating in my home

It brings the “Wow” factor

When I started thinking about decorating my own place, I discovered and was really drawn to settees.  I love the classic and elegant shape. I remember attending a friend’s wedding in France and seeing the most gorgeous antique settees. They were covered in delicate toile fabric and had these elegantly curved legs.  These settees both evoked the spirit of the chateau, but also gave off their own vibe as well.  Since then, I’ve vowed that I would have a settee somewhere in my home some day and Parisian decor will definitely inspire me. It is definitely a statement piece in a room and is now available in modern fabrics and prints as well.  I’d also love a large, plush tufted couch that looks luxurious, but is comfortable as well (meeting the needs for everyone). But also isn’t a couch in a great color the most inviting thing?

It lasts a while

Some things are built to last.  If you buy quality seating, it will be around for decades and decades. While I’m not encouraging my kids to dance on our vintage Dutch cafe chairs, I know that they’re solid and will last a while.  I instantly fell in love with these 1950s Ico Parisi sofa and chairs and can’t believe they’re more than 60 years old!

But these 18th century chairs are even harder to beat.  It goes to show that good quality will truly stand the test of time. Why I'll always have Vintage Seating in my Home - 18th century chairs

It’s easy to switch out

I have a mixed decor vibe in my house – there are some French countryside vibes mixed with a touch of modern as well.  I certainly wouldn’t mind a cool touch like the trend of unique entryway seating.

But seating is easy to switch out.  If I wanted to switch up the aesthetic of a room, I can easily switch out the chairs. I’ve bought all my seating secondhand and love to see what people are selling and how it can add to my home. We’ll certainly have to eventually furnish our home in New York.  So you can see why I’ll always have vintage seating in my home.

I love vintage pieces. They are so beautiful and so well made. Not particle board and crap like you see today. I fear the day when pieces like those become hard to find.

THe inspiration pics you shared looked lovely 🙂 WE don’t have any vintage pieces of furniture in our house but that’s probably a good thing given how crazy and tiny my boys are, haha!

Once we get a bigger place I’d definitely love to invest in some proper furniture, but until then it’s cheap and cheerful for us!

I hope that you are having a nice start to your week so far! It’s a little colder here after a warm weekend but the rain is welcome 🙂

You’re so right that one of the easiest ways to change the aesthetic of a room is by simply by changing out the seating. While I like the look of vintage pieces butthe germophobe in me definitely prefers to buy new ;p

What I love most about the use of vintage pieces like this, is that you can use these pieces to be the focal point of the room which saves money and energy on other aspects of the room. I’ll definitely be trying out this strategy.

All this seating is so unique. It really stands out in the space and feels really inviting. Really love the look of all of them, especially the blue couch with the white boxes around the cushions. This really makes it looks more full and appealing.

My eye is immediately drawn to the vintage pieces in each photo. These pieces really separate the spaces from many of the other “cookie-cutter” spaces i see constantly.

wow! it’s incredible the difference the right seating can make! It usually takes me forever to find seating that matches the aesthetic of the room while at the same time adding something of its own. vintage is definitely the way to go!
