What to wear and how to stay comfortable while traveling

January 16, 2013

Are you flying some where soon?

I flyΒ a lotΒ (I used to be a consultant and flew out Monday to Friday) and am flying out next week for some fun in Boracay (yay!) Whether I fly for 1 hours or 22 hours (flight time back to NYC and my tips for surviving thatΒ here), I try to stay comfortable and chic (or at least not bummy looking!)

Here are the guidelines I use to make any trip a little more restful and chic:

1. Long layers please

Sweats aren’t the only comfortable piece of clothing for plane rides. Β Think about putting on a maxi skirt with your favorite top or pair a tunic with a nice pair of skinny jeans or jeggings. Β As I’ve mentioned before, planes are chilly so wear long layers on top and bottom.

2. Slip it onΒ

If celebrities didn’t have paparazzi following them everywhere, including at the airport, they wouldn’t be wearing sky high stilettos while running through the security line. Β Why should you? You will most likely have to take your shoes on and off for security screening and we all know how annoying some boots can be to put on (though of course they are fabulous when they are on!) It can also be difficult to tell how long it will be from one gate to another (O’Hare airport terminal transfers are looong!) or from your gate to the exit. Β So bring a good, comfortable pair of shoes that you wouldn’t mind walking in for a while!

3. Have necessities accessible

What do you need to do to really feel comfortable on a plane ride? Are you the kind of person that needs to brush her teeth every 8 hours on the dot? Do you want to have a misting spray on hand? Or do you value your time on the plane as good reading time? Β Ensure that your necessities are in travel ready condition (under 100 ml for liquids) and easily accessible in a convenient purse

4. Wear darker colors

I wore a white t-shirt and maxi skirt on a plane trip once while also enjoying a delicious ice cream bar. Β I discovered chocolate both inside and on the front of my shirt (I know, I was impressed it got in there too). Β You are in tight quarters and are constrained for space. Β Elbow bumping and a tiny square of a tray table are standard so wear darker colors on plane to minimize the appearance of any airborne accidents.

ITs sooo true about light colours and planes. I had a mishap wearigna light coloured skirt. needless to say the stain was not in a very nice area. Dark colours for sure! and I always pack a pair of socks I dont know why but I get really chilly flying.

More great travel tips! Your last post definitely helped me for my journey last month. The planes were all freezing and I was glad to have worn pants and a cozy flyaway sweater that doubled as a blanket.

Aww I’m glad I was able to help out Kim! Why is it that planes are so cold?!

  • debby January 16, 2013 at 09:50

I definitely like to be comfy on a flight, so layers always work for me. I always am cold on a plane too. xo

I am guilty of the yoga pants /hoodie assemble. Maybe next time I’ll try to be more chic! I really need to invest in a maxi shirt!!

There is nothing wrong with yoga pants and a hoodie. But a maxi skirt is so comfortable and chic too!I think Old Navy may have a good option now (or at least they did) and I love Splendid and Michael stars for quality cotton goodies.

Awesome tips! Layers are a must and you make a great point about dark colors. I used to wear pants when travelling but definitely prefer dresses now cause they’re so much more comfy.
