CnC Living Travel Log: Escaping the city to Stanley Beach and Stanley Market, Hong Kong

August 22, 2012

Who thinks of the beach when they think of Hong Kong?

I certainly don’t and yet I was strolling on a beach beside Stanley Bay a few days ago and a million miles from the tall towers of Hong Kong Island.  The town of Stanley in the Southeastern part of Hong Kong island was the former administrative capital of Hong Kong during the British annexation of the area (prior to its move to Victoria).  Now it is mostly a tourist destination and a place to escape the concrete jungle of the center part of town.

It was beautiful visiting at dusk and watching the sun go down as the gentle waves broke on the beach (which by the way isn’t much of a beach). I liked it because the area itself was small enough to enjoy at a leisurely pace.  We took a green mini bus from Causeway Bay for 40 HKD and it was super convenient to go on a last minute trip there (it is less than 30 minutes from Causeway Bay on the bus).  You pass through Stanley Market on the way to the boardwalk and there are standard touristy t-shirts and trinkets at the market.

I just love to people watch and admire the architecture, like the Victorian style Murray building.

Be warned that the restaurants can be a little pricey and crowded, but you are after all paying for the view so enjoy it (or just have a drink!)

This is so cool and I was in China last week and wish I could have visited Hong Kong. This looks so beautiful and I liked hearing about the history behind the city too.

Yes it really is so unexpected and cool – a different view of HK!

Beautiful photos! Is it strange that I love boardwalk t-shirts and trinkets? I am always tempted to pick up an item or two wherever we go. You definitely pay a premium in SF for the city and ocean views, and the food is rarely worth it for the price. Drinks are the perfect way to go!

Yes we spent way too much on mediocre food so I wouldn’t recommend it. But it is hard to beat the view!

It looks so much more tranquil there, so much unlike the bright lights and tall buildings I’ve seen in Hong Kong, what a great place to escape the bustle of the city.

never been there before. will look into visiting next time in HK.

I never would have pictured a touristy beach town in Hong Kong, but I suppose it makes sense! Looks pretty!

  • bravoerunway August 22, 2012 at 21:42

Hong Kong has beaches? Well let’s just stop the convo right here…there is time to go to the beach vs shopping? Shopping vs. beach? Beach vs. Shopping…ahhhhhh!

    • Chic 'n Cheap Living August 22, 2012 at 22:00

I know you would accomplish both activities my dear!

  • Lyddiegal August 22, 2012 at 23:57

East Asia proper isn’t really known for its beaches. Most of the great beaches I have found in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan have been hidden gems. There are some great beaches, but people thing tropical islands in the South Pacific or Southeast Asia like Thailand or Indonesia.

Hong Kong is on my list, I still haven’t been there.

    • Chic 'n Cheap Living August 23, 2012 at 21:51

There are really a few gems for beaches in North Asia – you just have to find them!
