“Every act of rebellion expresses a nostalgia for innocence and an appeal to the essence of being.”
― Albert Camus

Let’s face it. We’re not innocent anymore.
It’s not necessarily that we’re all a bunch of jaded adults completely skeptical of this corrupt and terrible world. But we simply don’t possess true innocence anymore. We read the news. We hear gossip and putdowns from other people. We know that the world isn’t the glossy, shiny, perfect one depicted in magazines. We simply have lived and learned.
I thought it was really interesting to read the quote about acts of rebellion expressing a desire to the return of innocence and the essence of who we are. I look at my daughter frequently and think about her innocence. She is just learning about the world and discovering everything about it. Why does her voice sound so clear and booming in a certain space? Why is it ok to hug some people and not others? Why can’t she just run around and pull everything in her reach? While these questions are simple ones she will be able to answer quite soon, I also have a bittersweet feeling about her learning more and more about the world and not retaining the same sense of innocence. But we can still seek to return to some type of innocence – a time when all was new and pure, when we viewed the world with welcoming and wondering eyes.
So here’s to hoping that even the most skeptical among us can also find a route back to innocence once in a while.
Have a lovely week!
These dresses are absolutely beautiful!
Adults are definitely jaded. This is probably why I get so annoyed with people at times. Adults can be very hard and I suppose it’s the lack of innocence.
That quote is very thought provoking! Also, the editorial is beautiful 🙂
Sometimes I think it would be nice to return to a time of innocence. It must be great to be able see things through your daughter’s eyes sometimes.

That editorial is so dreamy! The world just seems to move too fast for me! Kids nowadays are growing up too fast. I’m all for technology but things they say, hear and repeat from others can be horrible.

It must be incredible to watch your daughter experiencing “things” and learning her way through life. I think at times something inside us becomes fed up conformity and it strikes back by doing something completely opposite to what is expected and thus labeled such. I sometimes see rebellion as a souls cry for help, or it reigning the person back to where they truly desire to be.

Sonia, you’re right – it really is pretty cool to watch my daughter experience everything. Rebellion can certainly be much more than pure acts of defiance, but calls for a different order and desire for someone to return to a much simpler state.
