“I’m not afraid of storms, for I’m learning how to sail my ship.”
Louisa May Alcott
Elle Denmark October 2015
Doing something new can be tough.
We’re not all naturally gifted or can learn all things well.
I remember my husband and I were taking finance courses at the same time. While I was able to grasp the basics and understand the concepts, I simply couldn’t wrap my head around the deeper analysis. Meanwhile my husband happily and excitedly went through his course and excelled enough to be able to serve as a faculty assistant the next semester (nerd). It was tough for me at times, but I became more comfortable with it and am still learning more about how to effectively lay out and understand finances.
I’m still learning now as I’m helping to launch this new company. Like every startup, we are doing everything and learning about everything. It can be pretty overwhelming because as we joke, our to do lists only get longer – as we complete one set of tasks, we are faced with more and more new responsibilities. I haven’t done a great job at managing it all. I’ve had a lot of stress at home as well and also have tried to get my bearings in my new role too. There have certainly been a few tough times. I’ve been exhausted and drained and there have been rough periods as everyone learns, falters, and gets up again.
But ever after several tough incidents, I’m fine. As Ms. Alcott also stated above, I’m still learning how to sail this ship. I’m actually glad to have encountered some of them so I can learn what I can do better. I can learn how to ask more questions, ask someone else to communicate with me more clearly, and prioritize my work. If I hadn’t gone through those incidents, I wouldn’t be able to understand what wasn’t working and grow from there. I’m not afraid of storms and I’m still sailing this ship. Life is all about weathering the storms and sailing through them right?
Have a lovely week!
What is your new start up? I somehow missed it…apologies!
From one working-start-up-mom to another…it does get better. You sort of hit your groove and find odd hours to work. For example, my best hours are from 8:30-1am. Good hours? No…but that way I still pay attention to my husband and kids and I love to work when the house is so quiet. Hang in there!
I’m at a fashion start up. It’s new to me and a lot to do, but so interesting and cool. You are superwoman – I am so dead at 11ish and still do some stuff but am so tired. Seriously, how do you do that?
Life is certainly a learning curve. Take it easy, and try not to stress much. I love the editorial, especially the long leather coat.

Well said Madison! Life is definitely a learning curve and I’m getting better at things alone the way. I love the long leather coat too!
This editorial is everything – love Josephine Skriver!
Congrats on your new startup!
xx
That is a beautiful quote! Good luck with the new company!
A new start up is always challenging, but so rewarding. I admire you! I think it’s fantastic and wish you the very best. I think it’s going to be grand 😀
