Are you satisfied with what you have? Or are you yearning for more? I can’t resist a good red carpet and of course this year’s Oscars didn’t disappoint. I appreciated that the gowns were mostly timeless and familiar. Why change up a classic too much right? The most striking details were in the texture and colors of the dresses. Otherwise, the silhouettes were flattering and not completely ostentatious.

Tina Fey’s Vera Wang dress had a familiar ethereal shape, but in a striking hue. Similarly, Constance Wu’s Versace dress and Jennifer Hudson’s Elie Saab gown were memorable not only for their interesting structure, but rich colors as well. I’m not always a fan of purple, but Lucy Boynton’s Rodarte gown was in the richest purple shade – how could you not love the color?

The metallic shades were equally captivating. They started from the subtle sheen on Amandla Stenberg’s Miu Miu ruched gown and Laetita Wright’s elegant Dior couture floral dress. But they really and literally shone on Michelle Yeoh’s Elie Saab strapless watercolor-esque Elie Saab gown and Brie Larson’s Oscar statuette (there’s always at least one right) Celine halter dress?

But there’s also the take on the classic long black dress. I loved the structure of Lady Gaga’s Alexander McQueen dress (those hips) and of course Billy Porter in that Christian Siriano gown. Now THAT is a memorable gown! I love how the tuxedo effortlessly becomes a full skirt on the bottom. That dress will go down in history.

What were some of your favorite looks from this year’s Oscars?
