Natural Beauty DIY: Skin soothing, pore cleansing, exfoliating oatmeal honey mask

September 12, 2013

I’m always looking for new ingredients or products that can both thoroughly clean my skin, while not completely stripping it.

Oats by Chic n Cheap LivingCleaning one’s skin is always a delicate balancing act between stripping off the dead skin and unnecessary oil without taking away too much that the skin underneath will be sensitive and damaged. Of course if your skin is prone to breakouts and light bouts of eczema, like mine, you have to be really careful not to aggravate any skin conditions.

I was looking for a natural skin remedy with powerful antiseptic ingredients that would still be gentle on my skin.  I previously read about the cleansing and exfoliating properties of oats and it seemed natural to combine them with the antibacterial properties of honey and lemon to prevent future breakouts.  The oatmeal in a ground form is also a more gentle exfoliant than one with larger granules (e.g. a sugar scrub which can be damaging to your skin).

DIY Oatmeal honey mask

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of oatmeal
  • 1 teaspoon honey (preferably raw)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Preparation and instructions

1. Grind oatmeal in a coffee grinder, blender or food processor to make it easier to apply.

2. Mix all ingredients together to create a paste.

2. Apply mixture to your clean face and leave on for up to 30 minutes.  Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Benefit Rundown

  • Oats contain proteins to maintain the skin’s natural moisture barrier
  • Oats contain saponins, a natural cleanser, which will remove dirt and oil from the pores
  • Honey can unclog pores and draw out impurities
  • Lemon has antibacterial and antifungal properties

I used to do mask with oats, honey and egg white. You’re inspiring to revisit it and add some lemon juice 🙂
