Since I’ve been looking into natural skin care a lot to create my own lip scrubs and face masks, I also wanted to see if I could create an easy, natural lotion as well.
I decided to try out shea butter because I’ve seen it listed in quite a few conditioners and body butters. it easily absorbs into the skin helping it to retain moisture, has good waterbinding properties, and easily melts at body temperature. I combined shea butter with a few other powerful oils to not only moisturize skin, but keeps it healthy. I also don’t love the scent of shea butter so the coconut or almond fragrances balance out the shea butter scent a bit (I’ll try this again with 1/4 cup shea butter and report back!)
DIY Shea and Coconut Body Butter
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup shea butter
- 1/2 cup cocoa butter
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup almond oil (jojoba oil would work too)
Preparation and instructions
1. Mix all ingredients together in a double boiler.
2. Melt mixture over medium heat and stir to combine thoroughly.
3. Remove from heat and cool mixture.
4. Put body butter into refrigerator to soften and chill for about 1 hour.
5. Remove mixture from refrigerator when it has hardened but still has a soft texture.
6. Let soften between your hands.
7. Use body butter immediately and keep remaining portion in the refrigerator. If let outside, it may melt, especially if you are in a warm climate.
Benefit Rundown
- Shea butter contains Vitamin E which balances skin, speeds up cell regeneration, and creates an anti-aging effect making the skin appear longer
- Coconut oil is antifungal and antimicrobial and will both moisturize and cleanse skin
- Almond oil contains several B vitamins, including Vitamin B6 to help maintain the good condition of skin. It helps in treating a number of skin problems, including eczema, dandruff, acne, and dry skin.
This looks awesome, have been meaning to try and make my own products…will have to make this soon :)) Have a great day doll xx
that is brilliant…did you like it?
I liked creating something on my own and it is super moisturizing! I want to make it again to decrease the shea butter though. Coconut oil and cocoa butter just smell so much better!
Now this sounds incredible – so luxurious and nourishing!
xx
I feel a business coming on for you! I would like to try this. Where would I find the ingredients? A health food store? xo
You are too sweet Debby. I just try and create things I would use and like, just like you and your fab creations! I bought everything from the organic coconut oil and cocoa butter to shea butter at Amazon. I LOVE Amazon and the pricing and selection there are great. I updated the post to include links to the exact oils I bought. I’m happy with them so let me know if they work for you too.
love this–you know i love a diy!
This is great dear! I love natural skincare as well, my sister is good about making most of her own stuff. I just use raw shea butter since I was young, it’s been a family tradition for decades.
Ooh I’ll have to try this!
I love the idea of making your own! I bet it feels so nice on your skin!

Shea butter leaves me a little nauseous sometimes, so I like that you said the coconut and almond cover it up. I am interested to hear how it works if you drop the amount of shea butter to a 1/4 cup….
I bet it smells amazing:) I am totally trying this:) Have a beautiful day, darling.
Shea and coconut are two of my fave things when it comes to beauty products. Super cool DIY.
I am a huge fan of shea butter (if you search my blog you can find a dedicated post). I just need to find 100% bio coconut oil to try out your recipe.

[…] – Natural Beauty DIY: Shea and Coconut Body Butter […]
[…] I feel you and remember mourning sunshine and warm weather, especially during my college years in a drearier, colder part of the US. Along with winter comes almost perpetually dry skin. I may not be experiencing frigid weather now, but I still look for natural and easy moisturizers to keep my own skin supple and full of moisture (see my shea and cocoa butter moisturizer here). […]
