I vowed not to be one of these people who would have boring maternity style. I want and try to have a few select maternity pieces that are versatile enough to work before, during, and after pregnancy. Luckily, I’ve been able to accomplish that with a few new pieces as well as existing pieces from my closet. I didn’t want to buy too many pieces that I would only wear for a few months. Luckily, I was also able to shop my own closet. It’s actually amazing and awesome that I can still fit some of these pieces!
Maternity Closet Essentials from a regular closet
1. Maxi dresses and skirts
Maxi dresses and skirts are definitely one of the most versatile pieces in my wardrobe. I’m still wearing a maxi dress right now even though I’m 9 months pregnant! The long and free-form shape are especially forgiving for growing bumps. I’ve worn both pregnancy and regular maxi dresses before and after my pregnancies. The maternity maxi dresses I have actually don’t look or wear any differently from regular maxi dresses. So I’ve actually worn a maternity maxi dress as well when I wasn’t pregnant!
One of my favorite e-tailers Shopbop is having a sale on their sale so you can check out some of their versatile maxi dresses and skirts! Here are the details:

THE GREAT. The Sleeveless Knotted Tank Dress, Shopbop, $83.25 after discount
2. Elastic waist skirts and leggings
I still wear regular Solow foldover leggings that luckily are still comfortable beneath my belly. These were my go-to black leggings and have a great length and stretch. I love that I can still wear them now! I also wear a favorite GAP skirt with a wide elastic band which has been a comfortable piece underneath some long tunics. Wideeee elastic bands are the key to comfort!
Hard Tail Foldover Leggings, Bloomingdale’s, $60
3. Slip on and jersey blend (stretchy!) dresses
Slip on and jersey blend dresses and skirts are also one of my closet staples. I’m wearing a Michael Stars dress now that has been one of my work staples. It is a really easy, free form dress so it has easily accommodated my body as it has gone through many different shapes. I also wear a few other cotton and jersey blend dresses that work well now (a slightly longer length is key!)
Women’s Michael Stars Pocket T-Shirt Dress, Bloomingdale’s, $92
4. Larger/free form fitting pieces
When in doubt, size up! I have a few tops in larger sizes that are now perfect for my large bump. I have a few tie dresses that have also transitioned perfectly into late pregnancy. These can be larger shift dresses or free form fitting pieces.
