“Love art in yourself, and not yourself in art.”
― Konstantin Stanislavski, My Life In Art
How do artists feel about their own work? When a model or actor is featured in a new advertorial campaign or blockbuster film, do they watch it multiple times? Do they obsess over how they appear? If I was an actress, I’d definitely want to watch my own films. I would want to sit in a small screening and see people’s reactions. Did I portray my character well? Do people identify with my character? Did I help to transport them to the world where my character was living? Similarly, do they feel what I felt when I played her? I could imagine becoming quite obsessed with my character.
In contrast, the quote above isn’t about beautiful roles and characters. This editorial featuring Keira Knightley in Harper’s Bazaar UK December 2016 is called “Theatre Icons”. But the quote actually calls on us to recognize art in ourselves first. I hadn’t thought about art in myself. But art is about self-expression, emotion, and of course beauty. Art transports me to another time and place. It is beautiful to think of art in myself and recognizing the emotion and beauty in myself. But when we recognize the art in us, then it truly shines through when we are a part of a work of art too. Recognize the art in yourself friends!

This editorial is stunning! In my experience most creatives are often their own toughest critics!

Ive never considered the art wIthin ourseLves, and it has me windering what that art might be for myself. Such an interesting yet beautifUl tOpic to ponder.
