“Together, we have the power to inspire, connect, and deliver on new opportunities and rich experiences that can open doors to innovation and progress while growing global economies and increasing well-being.”

When was the last time you touched another part of the world? Is there another part of the world that really effects you? I saw this editorial of Global talent for US Vogue April 2019 and love seeing such a diverse and indeed global cast of actresses. While I may have chosen a few different actresses to represent certain countries, I can appreciate the idea that globalization is here and it’s pretty cool.
I grew up mostly watching Hollywood films. Since I’m now an expatriate and lived in Asia for a few years, I wanted to understand a bit more of what is popular here. I started watching dubbed Taiwanese dramas (even my husband got into them lol) and have slowly become accustomed to films from Japan, India, and Korea as well. Our mere presence here and my kids as third culture kids connects us to different parts of the world quite seamlessly now. I will always be grateful for our experience living here. My kids are very much at home amongst both expat and local friends. They are quite happy to chow down on a good carrot (actually radish) cake and think long, tropical days are the norm.
I’ve also been accustomed to working globally with teams on different continents. It is so interesting working alongside people who are truly from all over the world. I’m no stranger to dry British humor, interesting Indian idioms, and Australian cookouts. While we will inevitably return to New York some day, I am happy to bring my knowledge and experience back to the States. We are connected to other parts of the world in ways seen and unseen.
Perhaps I’ve been thinking about this more because diversity is on my mind a lot. I see the underlying tensions between different ethnic groups. Of course immigration is a thorny issue as well in the States. But I’ve learned that we already live in an interconnected world and encounter many other global citizens in our own countries. I hope that we can all realize that our ability to inspire and connect with people from all over the globe will benefit us all. In the meantime, we can start by watching a few movies and appreciate global talent.
Have a lovely week!
I watched a lot of HK dramas back when I was living in Malaysia but it’s not as easily accessible here. I miss having English subtitles too!
Thanks for sharing this with us! I don’t know much about fashion but I like everything featured here – especially, how they naturally show the flowy textures of fabrics ( and, those pink shoes!).
Being an immigrant and living in such a diverse city, I should think about the issue more and make positive efforts more. Surprisingly, it is easier to form stereotypes and feel irritable around people.
Wish you have a great weekend!
