Fun Finds/{Art Highlight}: Paul Villinski Butterflies – from Gossip Girl and beyond

October 26, 2010

I may not have a Mariah Carey level of passion for butterflies, but I do indeed find them beautiful – how can you not be captivated by the colorful fluttering of a delicate creature that migrates thousands of miles to reappear to us in theĀ spring?

Paul Villinski is a Ā New York based designer that has likely found a new level of fame among the well-heeled female set for his art appearing in “Gossip Girl” Ā He has a collection called “birds and butterflies” that is made entirely from found beer cans (and sometimes vinyl records). Ā  Butterflies are a perfect symbol of how a somewhat rough item such as a beer can be transformed into something beautiful.

Here are a few favorites:

“Paradigm” – similar to the one he designed for Serena’s bedroom in “Gossip Girl”

“Vessel (For Amelia)”

“On Final (For Saint-Ex)”

“Diaspora”

“Wish”

All images from Paul Villinski

I love how the ordinary can be converted to something quite extraordinary. Ā It’s definitely inspiration for DIY projects at home as well.

What do you think of Paul Villinski’s work? Ā Is it something you’d display in your home?

These are so beautiful. I’ve never been a huge fan of butterflies in decor or in clothing prints, but last night I was definitely admiring Serena’s decor. I didn’t realize his work was reworked cans. What a brilliant idea.

  • Jennifer Fabulous October 27, 2010 at 03:28

“I may not have a Mariah Carey level of passion for butterflies…” I really adored this opening line. Made me smile. šŸ™‚

Also, this artwork is incredibly beautiful. Sometimes talent just blows me away. Sigh.

And your guest post sounds FABULOUS! My intention with these guest posts was to bring a little piece of my favorite blogs onto my blog. Hehe. So I’m glad that’s gonna be your topic. šŸ™‚

Villinski’s work is amazing! I was so excited to see his installation on the show! I’ve been making wall butterfly silhouettes from paper for years. If anyone is interested, I have an etsy shop where you can get them in a lot of different colors!
