FFF – Powerful portraits of Women of Color by Tim Okumara

January 31, 2020

Happy Fun, Free, Friday lovelies!

When you think of famous portraits, who do you imagine? I initially think of Mona Lisa and the Girl with a Pearl Earring. I hadn’t really though about it before, but haven’t seen portraits of many women of color (besides the powerful one of Michelle Obama). So of course when I think of a famous portrait, I think of the classic ones of Western European ladies. Tim Okamura is a Brooklyn based painter that has created several powerful portraits of strong looking black females in a variety of natural and urban settings. In an interview with Nailed, he said “it has challenged people’s ideas of who can represent who through art. People can quickly sense if artwork is from a place of authenticity or not – my messages are positive and so are my representations and this is a celebration of my community.”

Otherwise, this weekend I am…

…doing a little more cleanup. We decluttered a little at the beginning of Lunar New Year. But now we are really going to need to clean up more in preparation for hosting a few of my husband’s relatives soon. I’m not quite sure where we will put everything and where everyone will sleep but we will figure it out. We’re also contemplating whether to postpone our two short trips next month (Taipei and the Maldives) in light of the Wuhan coronavirus. Tough decisions…

What are you up to this weekend?

Have a lovely weekend!
