If you are ever in Seoul and want to visit a palace, consider visiting one during the changing of the guard. The changing of the guard at Gyeonbokgung palace has taken place from 1469(!) although the current reenactment only started in 1996. This palace was the main residence during the Joseon Dynasty. The guards dress in traditional clothing complete with weapons and accessories, perform the traditional changing of the guards and hold a small parade. Gyeongbokgung palace is the largest palace in Seoul and reportedly the most beautiful one as well. In any case, you can also see the changing of the guard at Gyeongbokgung palace or Deoksugung palace.
Head to Gyeongbokgung palace and see this ceremony at 10 am or 2 pm daily (except Tuesdays). I wish we knew this before we visited on a Tuesday!

Otherwise, this weekend I am…
…making our way back from Seoul. It’s been busy so far although I wish we had done more. But this is the reality not only of traveling with kids (and a husband who gets cranky in the heat). We are also dealing with summer heat waves (seriously we got SMS alerts about the heat in Seoul) and rain. I am glad we have seen a few palaces and eaten some good traditional, Korean food (Kalguksu was everyone’s favorite dish). I also can’t get enough Korean dumplings, or mandu! It’s the perfect little snack. Traveling in the summer heat is no joke though so we will be glad to be back soon.
