“The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life.” Richard Bach
Are you close to your family? My immediate family is in New York now and we’ve been a regular fixture in each other’s live because of FaceTime. I began to think of the concepts of love and family recently and who we consider family. We feel like we should just love family though we may have very different values or perspectives. So we may not feel close to all of our family members. This spread called love or Family in Vogue Italia June 2016 highlights different family members like sisters, partners, and parents.
My family is spread through the world and I don’t live close to any family here. But, we have created our own family here. We have one friend who is like a sister to us. She is always generous and kind, especially with her time with my little lady. We went on vacation with her to Phuket and have been trying to convince her to come with us to Maldives later this year. When we moved here, we also sought connections more actively because we are all expats.
Hence we have become family to each other. We hope that we will get along with her future husband (we have seen some suitors over the years) and that he also has a bond with our little lady. After all, we want to continue to be connected to her and everyone she brings into our lives as well.
I’m very close to my mom since she raised me on her own but I’ve never really been as close to our family just because it’s complicated. I do believe in the idea of friends as family and I’ve been lucky to have a few that would be close like that.
Rowena, I’m glad you feel the same way and love how some of my friends are my family!
any kind of close connection is so important, whether it be with your “real” family or others!!
i recently spent time with my parents. this only happens a few times a year. i’d say the first 8 hours were splendid. we were all on our best behavior, catching up, excited to see each other, and it was fun. after that I was kind of ready to go home (LOL!), but we still had a nice few days together. tempers flared a bit when driving in sf (@#$%^&!*!), but that is to be expected. all in all we got along great, and it was good to reconnect! I think it is just good to connect with someone! anyone! and/or more! if at all possible. life without meaningful connections would be terrible!
Truth – life is about meaningful connections, whether we are related to them or not!
Family is so important! Love these family photos 🙂
Your friends sounds nice! I’m sure everything will work out. I don’t have any family left. It’s just me and my mom.
