What does NYC feel like to you? I saw this editorial of Blanca Padilla for US Harper’s Bazaar September 2018 and of course had all the Big Apple feels. I’m visiting home in a few weeks and have mixed feelings. It has actually been a very long time since I last visited. My older one doesn’t really remember it and the baby hasn’t been to New York at all. Of course, I would have chosen a not so freezing time of year given the chance. But time is precious so I’ve ordered lots of winter clothing/begged friends for some kids clothes (also thank goodness for Black Friday shopping!) We’re just going to bear with the weather! After all, I did grow up commuting through the slush and snow!
New York is of course my childhood home and has so many memories. It’s a place of familiarity and comfort as I visit family and friends. I know some streets will be familiar, but also different. I’ll be comforted by the smells of my favorite Peruvian restaurant. Of course I’ll relish many bites of good, chewy New York bagels. Oh and let’s not forget some really solid pizza (hmm how will I get to Brooklyn?) It is also a place of wonder even though I’ve seen some sites many times. My mom has already bought tickets for the kids to see the Rockettes at Radio City. We have plans to visit the tree outside Rockefeller Center and perhaps do some skating. I will also definitely see the National September 11 Memorial which was so close to my high school. It also leaves me with feelings of mild trepidation. We’ve been in this safe expat bubble for so long that sometimes I fear I’ve lost my street smarts! New York definitely forced me to have some common sense and keep my wits about me.
So you can see that New York is a place of joy, wonder, fear, and a lot of good food for me. Every place will certainly have its pros and cons. But there truly is no other place with the energy of New York so I’ll be glad to be visiting again soon!

I’ve lived in NYC all my life so I call it home. Call me biased but this city has such a unique energy like no other. Even though I’ve lived in lower Manhattan for many years I still avoid the 9/11 memorial. It’s still too traumatic and it pisses me off how people happily take selfies there like it’s just any other tourist destination.
Yeah, I can understand taking photos, but it’s odd how people take selfies by the memorial. I am curious to see the site and how they paid tribute to rescuers that day.

such a fab editorial. not been to new york or america for that matter in many years and the thought of returning doesn’t fill me with excitement to be honest. much has changed since i’ve been there, but i’m sure it will be just fine. have a lovely day x
