What are the best vitamins for your skin?

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started paying more attention to my skincare.  I can’t get away with just washing my face and letting it be. I have to stay moisturized and keep fighting those fine lines.  So I started reading more and paying more attention to the ingredients in different skincare products.  I also started writing down the ingredients that really effect my skin.  There are a few key vitamins that really combine to protect and renew your skin and I’m keeping an eye out for them in my skincare products now.

The Best Vitamins for your Skin

Vitamin A

Vitamin A protects your skin from the signs of aging caused by free radicals. A lack of Vitamin A can leads to dry skin, hair, eyes as well as brittle fingernails.  It also contains soothing and hydrating properties.  This helps to create healthy skin collagen which minimizes premature wrinkles, premature facial lines and premature slackened skin.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an essential building block of our immune system and also helps to promote the creation of collagen. Like Vitamin A, Vitamin C helps our skin make collagen, a structural protein that should be abundant in our skin.   Collagen keeps our skin youthful and strong. A lack of collagen also leads to breakdowns or tears in the skin.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D has been found to help treat psoriasis (source). We can now create Calcitriol, vitamin D3, which is typically produced buyour own bodies. Calcitriol is a topical cream that has been effective in treating patients with cases of psoriasis. In a study, applying calcitriol reduced the amount of skin inflammation and irritation in patients with psoriasis and produced few adverse side effects.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is another superstar vitamin for skin keeping it moisturized and strong.  It contains fatty acids to build strong cell walls and also helps to heal skin.  Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps to neutralize free radicals and prevent cellular damage from something like sunburn.  It is used best in combination with vitamin C (source).

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is one of the new kids on the block, but is increasingly found in many different topical creams for the skin.  These superficial creams with Vitamin K may help preserve skin elasticity.  Studies have also shown vitamin K that is used in combination with vitamins A and C to help minimize dark circles under the eyes.

I take A LOT of vitamins, not as much these days but back when I was in Malaysia and I eat out a lot, I take Vitamin C, E, Fish oils, Evening Primrose, Calsium & Magnesium, Spirulina and a few more that I couldn’t remember. I don’t take as much these days as I mainly cook myself so I made sure there’s lots of vegetables and fruits.

Oooh thanks for this! I’M starting to pay more attention to my skin these days after being far too lazy for the last few years. I’m no spring chicken and while fine lines aren’t an issue (yet) it’s better to be safe than sorry. Vitamin C is such an awesome vitamin, I always up it during flu season, but I had no idea it helped the skin too! Gotta up it year round!
