Beauty: Cold Weather Beauty Essentials

March 1, 2012
It is still chilly in many areas.  How does your skin feel in this weather?

Diane Kruger in Le Figaro Feb 2011

I know my hometown of NYC is still a bit chilly.  Since I mostly moved to a tropical country, I forgot how my skin changed and needed different care in colder weather.  When I was last in NYC, my skin became drier much more easily and it could have doubled for the gecko in the Geico commercials (yikes).
I managed my winter skin by following a few simple beauty rules-basically remember to moisturize, protect, and renew you skin!

Here are a few beauty essentials I use from winter to spring:

3. Cure Natural aqua gel, Amazon, $38

Tinted Moisturizer and/or Lotion with SPF (Face)

SPF rays are sneaky things – they come through regardless of temperature or cloud cover.  My go to option is La Roche Posay Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15 (sometimes I mix it with a sunscreen too). I first started using using it after reading an article talking about the ingredient Mexoryl which protects against UVB rays – these are the rays that penetrate deep into the skin and cause sun damage; La Roche Posay is one of the few manufacturers that use this ingredient (quick article here).  Other sunscreens only protect against UVA rays that cause tanning or sunburn.  So this lotion (or an equivalent with UVB protection) is my hands down recommendation.  It does get slightly greasy so be warned though!
But what about those times you want SPF protection and want to even out skin tone as well?  I like to use Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturizer (the illuminating one can cause breakouts, at least for me).  A savvy option would be to mix a good moisturizer with your existing foundation!
Scrub/Exfoliant
Finally, remember to scrub away those dead skin cells!  Use a good loofah or scrubber for your skin and a scrub for your body.  I’ve heard the Clarisonic brush is great – has anyone used it?
I use everything from Clinique to St. Ives (my husband loves this even more and it is under $4!)  I’m also curious about this product, Cure, that I’ve seen in Asia.  It exfoliates without using any scrubbing beads and is well loved in Japan and on Amazon.  I’ll definitely try it soon and review it!

Lotion (Body)
It is essential to keep your skin moisturized, especially during those brutal winter months. I can normally get away with not moisturizing, but not when I am in cooler temperatures.  I have eczema and sensitive skin so need a good moisturizer with lasting power.  I like Vaselinebecause it is effective, affordable, and easy to find.  The gel version also seems interesting – has anyone ever tried it?

I started using Dove moisturing cream oil this winter and it’s been quite effective. I’m also a big fan of that LRP Anthelios moisturizer. Glad it’s so much easier to find in the US now.

Sunscreen is so important. I’ve read that almond oil is best for hands and feet and plan to try it out

Right now….my face feels like it is the sahara desert, it is SO dry! I think I do want to get a tinted moisturizer, was so excited about the luminating one from my birchbox last month from Jouer. And….then it caused breakouts which required that I apply 3 kids of zit creams causing the dryness! ARGH!

In the winter I make sure to always remember to give my skin additional moisture products. These are great choices, I have not heard of the Cure, will need to try that one.

    Answer: Clinique Yellow Face Cream.

I’ve used it since I was little, and have never had a problem! I usually use it less/not at all in the summer unless indoors, and I use it all the time in the winter. Also Korean face masks!

Fantastic!! I always have to remind myself to keep up with my face regime. The winter rain has given it a beating. I wish I lived in warmer climates!! Have a wonderful weekend! xx
