In the Kitchen: Easy Applesauce {recipe}

March 13, 2014

There are some things that kids do NOT eat.

Applesauce was one of those things I just wouldn’t eat. Ā The texture was strange and I would have rather had a fresh apple. Ā But then I began exploring lower fat alternatives for baking and applesauce is a great stand in for oil in a few recipes (see my yummy applesauce oatmeal cranberry cookies!) Ā I wanted to call out the recipe individually because my husband loves the applesauce on its own. Ā It is also wonderfully fragrant and so much tastier when it is homemade. Ā I’m going to use it tomorrow with some cake mix for easy cupcakes – I think it will be a hit!

Applesauce

Ingredients

  • 4 peeled, cored Fuji apples cut into thick slices (I usually do quarters and trim the edges)
  • zest strips from 1/2 lemon or 1/4 mandarin
  • 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup waterĀ

Servings

About 2 cups

Preparation

1. Ā Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil.

2. Bring heat to a simmer and cover. Ā Cook for 40 minutes or until tender.

3. Blend or mash apples with a spatula and enjoy!

    Store bought applesauce can not even compare to homemade. It’s just so good, you could devour it in a second!

    I’ve never really been a fan of applesauce because I find the texture off putting but I should give it another chance.

    OOhhh– I never thought of adding mandarin to my applesauce! After having my daughter I made all of her food myself initially, and now, even though she eats more adult food, I still make applesauce regularly. This will be a nice addition to it!
