Isn’t it scary how much you can vow not to be like your mom and then end up exactly like her? My mom can be a nervous stress ball taking on too much but still wanting to accomplish a million things. So me!
My project this week – those cookie favors for my relatives for my Taiwanese wedding dinner.
Conversation with mom:
Mom: Are you doing something special for the guests? Favors aren’t expected, but you should do something.
Me: I’m going to give them chocolate chip cookies mom.
Mom: Nooooooo. Chinese people don’t eat cookies. Get them something English.
Me: Like what?
Mom: Something London. Something else.
Me: But these are English butter cookies with chocolate chunks – very English and American. I’ll put them in little bags.
Mom: Fine. But wrap them with lace or make them nice. Chinese people don’t care. But they should be nice.
Sigh.
But I will listen because I’m not really sure what I should and shouldn’t do with my relatives in Taiwan. I should be culturally aware while still trying to retain my own vision. There is sometimes a more showy aspect in Taiwanese weddings which I’m not entirely comfortable with (ugh an entirely separate conversation around creating a slideshow).
Anyhoo, in other news, I won my lady Thirty Something Bride’s custom couture garter contest! Woot! Well Mr. Gadget is certainly excited. Sigh, I feel like I just got the Hermes Birkin of garters, I am so lucky. I’m working with sweet Claire at Florrie Mitton couture to create a garter that’s a hybrid of these and she’ll be expressing it this week.
I’m loving it for pictures and the vintage chic vibe (ME!). What do you think?
Oh gracious…I love both of those garters! 🙂
oh yay you for winning the garter! I’m soooooooo damn jealous!! (I really wanted to win that!!)
LOL…. my sister didn’t give wedding favors b/c there were too many guests. : )
I just LOVE that second garter! Good luck on all your plans coming together 🙂
First – congrats on the garter! It’s gorgeous and I’m sure you’ll appreciate the secret luxury throughout the entire event. Second – just nod and agree with your Mom at this point. She essentially is on the same page (based on the conversation above), she just wants to make sure she’s heard. And keep repeating: “it’s going to be okay. It was okay in NYC and it will be okay now.” Because it will, and that’s the truth.
Oh! I can’t wait to see how it comes out. Congrats on winning, and WOO HOO chocolate chunks! lol
I’m sure everything will be ok and your garter will make up for it. Quick question what is the real purpose of a garter anyway?

Those garters are incredible. I bet your custom piece will be divine!
Thanks ladies! It was unexpected, but I’m pretty excited. Hoping the hybrid comes out well!
I’m not doing a public garter throw because I don’t want any relatives seeing my upper thighs thank you.
FASHIONconfectionary – here is an answer I found for garters:
THE GARTER
Throwing the garter is derived from an old English custom called “flinging the stocking.” Guests would invade the bridal chamber and steal the bride’s stockings, then take turns flinging them. Whoever threw the one that landed on the groom’s nose, would be the next to marry.
These days, the groom removes the garter — generally worn at the sexier mid-thigh level — from her leg (as innocently as possible, we’re sure) and tosses it to his bachelor pals.
i’m SOOOO jealous!!!
Those are lovely! I can’t wait to see the final product. Congrats on winning the contest!
Gorgeous garters! Especially loving the second one!

OMG! So gorgeous!!!!! And I just read what you said about not wanting anyone to see your upper thighs LOL I would be the same way! 🙂
Your mom is too cute for words!
The second garter is so pretty – this one is my fav out of the 2 😉
*Sigh* I am so jealous of your garter…but happy that you won it of course! I can’t wait to see what the end result is!!!
Cute garters!! Love the “different-ness” of the second one.
And moms. Oh, moms. There just aren’t any words…
That is gonna be one awesome (and HOT-ass) garter!! Love it!
Cute garters! Hmm I can kinda see the point b/c as soon as you eat a cookie it’s gone so you don’t have any real souvenir of the day.
