Making a pretty picture, an image, is a completely different thing from acting to camera.
Gemma Chan
Would you rather be a photographer or an actress? I loved this editorial of Gemma Chan for Harper’s Bazaar Singapore March 2019 and her quote also stirred up some thoughts I have about spontaneity, organization, and opening up my personal life. I don’t share too much of my personal life and don’t show too much of my face on here or my different social media channels. But my little lady LOVES performing and doesn’t mind doing it for anyone. So I’m just really reserved or private in some ways but that isn’t necessarily true for the little ones! I also am more of a planner and enjoy amateur photography. I like framing a shot and thinking about how the different elements in the background and light may effect it too. It speaks to my love for beauty and design as well as a need to control my environment.
But I used to be much more spontaneous and open. I was in various choirs and did some acting for school productions. I actually even had a short lived dream of being an actress (well I had this dream when I was about 9 years old and never acted on it!) I thought it would be so cool to play a different person and have fun. While I last performed in a few college variety shows many moons ago, I haven’t indulged the acting bug since then. When I look at my kids, I wonder if this speaks to a lost spark of openness and love for performing for others. Or am I just afraid of oversharing/harsh judgment in this day and age?
Perhaps both aspects are true. Sometimes the more we learn, the more cynical we may become. I also like to think about the differences in photography and acting – both require lots of practice, but modeling shots can be adjusted on the spot while stage performers don’t get that luxury and have almost a closer relationship with their audience. I hope my little ones are just comfortable in their own skin whether they want to be actors, photographers, or something else. At the end of the day, what we share and who we engage with are our own choices.
Have a lovely week!

This looks like it was a fun shoot to create. I love taking photos, and I would probably not be an actress just becasue I prefer to be behind the scenes and I am more private. Once in a blue moon, I will surprise prople and share a photos of myself, but, to be honest, quite rare these days, LOL.
