“I do not wish women to have power over men; but over themselves.”
– Mary Shelley
How do you describe yourself? How do you describe yourself as a women (or if you’re a man, how would you describe yourself as a man)? I thought of these questions when I was flipping through this series of editorials by Vogue. In 2016, Vogue decided to undergo a project celebrating American women. This project involved a group of different photographers that captured different groups of American women. As a result, American Women in Vogue March 2017 highlighted American women in all walks of life.
First there are women that identify themselves through their affiliations. The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority sisters represent the oldest black sorority in the US. Then, there are other women whose identities are very much wrapped in their backgrounds. They may be devout Muslims or proud Chicano girls. Meanwhile, other women live in the Midwest or California and are shaped by their hometowns. Finally, there are women who work in specialized fields for NASA or covering press for the White House. As a result, each woman is shaped by a mix of different factors.
I’m also certainly shaped by my background. I’ve lived abroad for years, but my NYC upbringing instilled a sense of street smart and an appreciation for cultural diversity. In addition, I’m also representative of my graduate school and have a strong sense of wanderlust and inquisitiveness. I hope to continue representing my background and associations in a positive manner.
Have a lovely week!
these are amazing images! so strong and powerful. i think there is a thousand ways to describe ourselves, but that’s what i love abut it!! we can be everything!! x
Wow I love these photos, props to Vogue for featuring women from all backgrounds and walks of life! Honestly I’ve never thought about this before but I do know that who I am today is a result of my experiences up until now, and I love that’s what makes me uniquely me 🙂
What an awesome photo project!
That’s an interesting question and one that I never paid much thought on…how do I describe myself as a woman? Honestly I don’t know…I think I am kind, compassionate but also no bullshit and I pretty much take on anything head first. I am a modern woman but at the same time I love cooking and being a great wife and mother and I try to spoilt my family as much as I could. I make sure the house is spotless, there’s always food in the kitchen and fridge….I know some see that old school but on the contrary, I think it’s hard to find the perfect balance and if there is a woman who successfully find that middle ground, then she’s a Superwoman in my eyes.
Well said! I’m similar to you. I certainly believe in woman’s empowerment and her ability to have options, but love being a doting wife and mother. It is always hard to find that balance and we always strive for it right?
Women around the world are multifaceted! Absolutely Extraordinary!
